Why that ? Mahler was a very experienced & celebrated conductor, but in all fields including opera & symphonic music. This might be the reason, why he (sometimes) filled his scores with remarks, accents, dots, cresc. & decresc. etc.
I am sure (and have some letters from that time, besides private photos of Mahler) that he insisted, that every dot of his compositions be played. It all depends on the margins which you set for the decrescendi & crescendi, the rubati, the dynamic. Bernstein was extremely emotional. We say, that Mahlers music is somewhat "drunk" . Bernstein did that best for me. He understood this decadent or morbid Viennese "Fin-de-Siecle" feeling. Bernstein watching the stage-horn-band for the Tristan first act, when we did it at JFK Center in D.C. 1979 with VPO: "Wagner must have been a very good f......r, because he wrote so f.....ng good music !" It says all about Bernstein“s character. He was really deep in the music. ######################################################################################### Am 16.03.2010 um 03:53 schrieb [email protected]: > I have that recording and although it's a cleaner recording (and you can > tell if the playing is cleaner or not), I don't agree that the interpretation > is better. > > Then again, I prefer Bernstein with anything Mahler - simply because he's > not afraid to get more blood out of the piece (and the players).
