Toxic? Look at the pot calling the kettle black. I have enclosed an email
Mr. Jellison wrote several months back about his role in amateur orchestras.
He apparently has no morals as well.

Subject: [horn] Re: How to get fired by a stick waver

Last night was our first rehearsal in our community orchestra for the
winter/spring season. I had been "working" on the conductor to replace the
principal, a person who held that position for a decade. Last night my
"wish" was granted and another horn player was made full principal.

Yes, this can be a risky thing to do, to ask the conductor to replace the
principal. I started commenting to the conductor a year ago that the section
would never improve unless there was a principal who was capable of doing
the job. Doing the job includes leading, nurturing, and inspiring the rest
of the section, as well as playing horn well (artistry, intonation, rhythm,
volume, etc). By just shifting the personnel around, the section sounds
significantly better and we will be able to recruit better for the open 4th
position.

Before you speak up, do your own risk assessment-- how receptive and
friendly is the conductor; how much does he value your own presence in the
orchestra; do you have a convincing argument? Are you ready to leave if the
effort really backfires? Sometimes it is worth getting involved. But, never
do anything to embarrass the conductor; conversations need to be private.

Hans, want this topic thread to end? Well, then get out of it, and the
other pros get out of it, too. This thread was about an amateur ensemble
issue, the seating of musicians. The originator of the thread is actually a
much better horn player than the person sitting in the principal position of
the ensemble she was writing about, and in her modesty she did not claim
herself to this list to be such. You pros have your own issues, and we
understand that your work environment is extremely competitive and tense.

I find the criticisms of William to be way over the top. He stated that he
has another day job (not as a horn player), and thus can play without the
pressures of a pro. Paul, in particular, is toxic and hasn't contributed a
worthwhile comment to the thread. I suggest you pros stay on your own topic
threads if you can't maintain the integrity of the thread topic as
presented, as you have highjacked this topic to vent your own pet peeves.

Regards,
Larry
