The latter would be helpful, but I simply enfuse my induividual shots (since they're pre-aligned by the tripod), and then use hugin to make a panorama of the already-fused shots. It would be fun to be able to do HDR panoramas handheld, but I find tripods a great aid to quality anyway, for many reasons.
