With near total failure of all the sheetwaters shorebirds have been
limited to the flood plain and an spot of offlimit road S of Bradgate.
There was a Dunlin north of Ottosen in a grass marshland with a flock of
Dowitchers. Dowitchers were also in high numbers in the areas around
Bradgate as well as Wilson's Phalaropes and a few Least Sandpipers and a
Semipalmated Plover. A particular treat and a first for me was to watch a
Peregrine Falcon sally forth over a wetland trying to force some
shorebirds to flush. I went to Bradgate Management area and relocated the
pair of sapsuckers with further evidence of breeding with one of the pair
actively searching cavities possibly for nesting purposes.
