Even the IBM z/VM developers will tell you that, so it's not The One True Way at all. It's just that if you get beyond two or three Linux systems, it makes a lot more sense than doing them in separate LPARs. >If you already have z/VM in place, there is no reason to run Linux in a >separate LPAR (and every reason not to). I can think of at least one good reason not to do that: if you're running z/VM _and_ z/OS on the same set of standard CPs (which the OP most likely is doing). Adding Linux into the workload (assuming you don't convert some of those CPs to IFLs or buy "new" IFLs) would probably mean having to turn on more engines at some point, driving up your z/OS software charges considerably. Now, buying an extra IFL or two, and licensing z/VM won't cost nearly as much, but it won't be a zero cost, whereas creating an LPAR might been seen as zero extra cost (apart from the cost of the Linux license). Speaking purely from a performance standpoint, z/VM is not going to be an issue, with only a bare minimum of tuning. Using z/VM _will_ make your entire life as a systems programmer a whole lot easier, particularly if you get into running more than a couple Linux systems. Or if you want to be able to create z/OS test images and tear them down from your desk. Or if you don't want to come in at midnight on Saturday to do z/OS testing. Or... In any case, you'll love it. It's why I call z/VM "a system programmer's operating system." -snip- >Yes, subscribe to linux-390. Also see http://www.linuxvm.org/ (which is >maintained by Mark Post). Yes, the mailing list is _highly_ recommended.
