Hee! A few years ago we had a total power outage in the computer room,
result of an UPS failure. The kids hadn't gone through a power-cycle in
a coon's age, and nobody over there knew how to get things back up.

Well, most of my procedures are printed out and available in softcopy
version.
However only very few of them really need to be on hardcopy. Vast
majority is usable only when the "documentation server" is up.
As an example - there is no help from hardcopy describing CICS region,
because nobody is able to start it during power outage. There is no
reason to know how to restore Exchange server without having running
Windows server, backup server and the network. Etc. etc.
Of course UPS, Diesel generator, network - those are the areas where
hardcopy is usable.
Side notes:
- softcopy procedures can reside on my laptop or tablet. It works
without network, even without UPS. It it failed, then my coworker laptop
should work.
- from the other hand - sometimes it's easier to keep the sheet of paper
and maybe check some checkpoints. Especially when you have to move your
*ss from the desktop and go to the UPS room or to Diesel container or to
server room. You can drop the procedure and it should work after you
pick it up. I would be so sure in case of laptop.
