I tested it on openSUSE 13.1 + KDE 4.11.

- If an xkb engine is selected, the panel is empty. It looks a strange gray
box for people always using xkb engiens. One idea is showing an icon and/or
a text indicating the current input source.
Probably I think it was fixed in the next patch:

- It would be better if the panel disappears soon after any keys were typed.
I think you mean input method engines because xkb engines do not show the
panel with above fix.
I'm thinking another usage.
E.g.
1. Type Zenkaku-Hankaku and switch Eisu to Hiragana mode.
2. Type any keys and know the current mode is Hiragana.
3. Click the input mode button on property panel and choose Katakana.
