It's all just a tempest in a teapot, and not all *that* important. What is important is that the messages get through and are (one would hope) understood by the interested parties. I try to be considerate as much as possible, but I don't *really* care all that much about whether you're supposed to reply at the top or bottom. It's like whether or not you hold up your pinky when you drink a cup of tea. I happen to prefer top posting. It's what I'm used to, and what I will continue to use. Most of my private e-mails come back with replies posted at the top, with nearly all the quotes from all the previous e-mails included at the bottom. Even if the message goes back and forth ten times. Nobody seems to care about it. I never heard of these rules until joining several lists recently, and this is the only one I've encountered where it seems to matter to anyone. One thing I do agree with is the trimming of quotes, but only for lists. For private e-mails, nobody I know seems to care about top or bottom replies - or if they did, they've never said so. It just isn't all that important, and certainly not on-topic for the iMac list. You do it your way, I'll do it mine and we'll both get on with life. Consideration for others is a great thing, but come on! All this nit-picking is getting ridiculous.
