Best form is exactly what Thomas did here -- posting your reply after the relevant part of the message you are responding to and trimming out anything not necessary for you to understand his reply even if you hadn't read the original email. Next best IMHO is replying after quoting the relevant portion(s) of the original email. Third choice: Posting your reply above the original, since that reverses the chronological sequence.
