software that it runs should have no effect on the temp so I can't think of anything else. Or, you might have an app with a memory leak causing the crashes that just so happens to build up as the heat does.

That's not totally true. Heavy use of the CPU can lead to an increase in heat output. As can thrashing the hard disk, or constantly swapping stuff in and out of RAM. As a PC gamer I can vouch for this personally :D

I know my G3/400 does all 3 just to stand still sometimes in Jaguar, which is another reason I bought a G4 iMac, and compared to running earlier OS X versions or 9.2.2 it does almost seem to put out more heat. Heat definitely is a factor that causes crashing, but it is more likely a software issue, Jaguar seems less stable on older G3 based machines, it certainly is on both my G3 and my iBook. Also there is no accounting for appalling software writing, especially on stuff like Carracho, Limewire (yeh i know they are not the same by a long margin) and the like, this could be causing crashes, as David says.

Basically you need to diagnose this in a logical manner, try leaving it standing without certain programs running, and then conclude if the heat is causing a problem, if it isn't then it's probably not an issue.
