Well, as Carracho is running (uploading & downloading) the hard disk never stops, thought I wouldn't call it thrashing...
Just having it spinning generates a lot of heat, especially if it's made by Seagate :). I'd be tempted to try spinning the hard disk down after a few minutes of idle, although if your downloading that won't help.
The vast majority of heat coming off an old iMac is from the CRT anyway, but that generally stays constant, unless the screen is turned off.
