The Mac is not covered or shoved in a corner, there is plenty of room around it.

Yeah, that's a bummer. I too wish that when the display only was "asleep" it really turns of the monitor. Since you say there's ventilation around it try a small fan on it somewhere --- software that it runs should have no effect on the temp so I can't think of anything else. Or, you might have an app with a memory leak causing the crashes that just so happens to build up as the heat does.
