This is where you start to see the failing of the 'all-in-one' principle.

I've never heard anyone argue that iMac was environrmtally freindly, in fact I'd go as
far as saying it is the opposite as it's design ethos is as a 'use it up and throw
away' machine rather than a desktop which can be upgraded.

Basically you seem to have run into one of the sitiations on a list that the original
iMac was not designed to cope with. This is why my G3 is staying in service. When I
get up and leave the room for any length of time my iMac is put into sleep. Anything
like long downloads, or the like that require a machine to be running 24/7 is usually
alloted to my G3.

If you seriously need to download conastantly from Carracho and other similar services
it might be worth investing in a PCI beige powermac. There are a lot around and, since
Jaguar became the mainstream version of OS X, 604 machines have dropped through the
floor in price. Not so long back I bought a G3/300 upgraded 7500 with 384MB RAM off
LEM Swap for $58. These sorts of machine are going to get cheaper still with the
release of Panther, which looks currently as if it is unlikely to support Old World
ROMs (note this is *not confirmed*). Either way Carracho could be easily run on an old
machine and stuffed under the desk somewhere and forgotten about, maybe with a 14"
monitor for what little use you need to have with it.

If only Remote Desktop was built into OS X Client. If Apple are looking to upstage
Windows XP (as Steve made clear at WWDC) then this one has to be on the list of
features it still doesn't have integrated that XP does.

Anyhoo, I digress. Basically give the machine a break from time to time to cool down.
