I am rather new to Mac's, and I like my Imac, but you seem to have all the
problems of anyother computers.
No, we don't. You have never read a report about a virus wiping out data, or a hacker stealing our personal info. You do not routinely read about someone reinstalling their system or having to go without their machine for weeks at a time because it "broke down." You do not read stories of our machines catching fire or overheating and melting the motherboard.
Our problems on our Macs are generally VERY minor compared to our PC brethren, and the cause of said problems is usually down to owner error. Also, keep in mind that the PURPOSE of lists like this is to complain about problems, so you're getting a VERY disproportionate view of Mac ownership -- millions of people use their Macs for years on end with absolutely NO trouble whatsoever, and many of the ones who DO have a problem recognise that the problem stems from their own lack of knowledge rather than a machine defect or flawed design. HUGE difference.
Why are Macs considered such a big deal?
I could go on all day about this, but in a very tiny nutshell:
1. More elegant.
2. More reliable.
3. Makes users more efficient.
4. No viruses. (this fact alone would save the US economy over $10 BILLION a year if Macs were the dominant platform!)
5. No security problems. (see #4 above!)
6. Microsoft is optional.
7. Longer lifespan, better value.
8. Empowering (by this I mean that a "normal" person with a Mac can do a LOT more than a "normal" person with a PC).
9. Better integration (things "just work").
10. Does not fight the way you want to work (BIG difference from Windows!).
11. Superior quality applications.
12. Less spam* (if you use Mail.app)
I might be wrong, but what is so great about a Mac.
You're wrong. See above.
If you're only using a Mac to check your AOL email and play Solitaire like the rest of the Windows sheep, then no you're not going to really notice the difference to a PC (except that you no longer have to completely reinstall your system an average of three times a year, losing a lot of personal data in the process each time).
If you're primarily using a computer to play games, then you might find the Mac to be a less than ideal choice compared to a PC or even a Playstation.
If you're using a Mac to do ACTUAL WORK, however, its advantages become OBVIOUS and HUGE compared to Windows pretty quickly. Though it's available on the PC now, iTunes is a pretty good example of "the Mac difference:" it's a clean, easy-to-use program that does several times more than any one comparable Windows program, it offers better value and has lots of levels of features for those who can fully utilize it, but it's just plain for those who only want to use it on its most basic level. Once you "grok" the level of integration, power and managability built into the program, "normal" Windows programs look like poorly-designed kludges of crap.
Which they by and large are.
It took me forever to down load a program. Just tell me what the big deal is.
I will if you tell me how "downloading a program" on the same internet connection would be any better on a PC.
