Ordinarily you can't install an OS that is earlier than the one your Mac shipped with. If you have your original OS CD, you could install that, then do the necessary firmware update from there.
Oh yes....just to add that I can still install OSX on the hard drive. that installs fine. It just wont boot unless i do the old "hold down 4 keys and reset the PRAM". And its a bit unstable
mainly due to the firmware being out of date.
So, it's unclear to me if you have or have not got OS X on the iMac, at this point. If you do, it seems to me that you can find the needed firmware update in the Utilities folder of the X install CD.

Thats the problem. I cazn install OSX but you need os9 to do the firmware updates. You cannot do a firmware update from within OSX for some reason.
