I think that only PCs, and probably only PCs with USB 2 (the iMac in
question has USB 1) can use the iPod over a USB connection.

You could add a FireWire port to the iMac, and double its speed, with a
HARMONi upgrade from Sonnet, but that's $350:

You might be able to find a new or used HARMONi with less MHz for less, but
Sonnet only lists the 600 MHz, and that's the only one OWC is currently
selling too.

I don't know how much the first generation of iMacs that had FireWire built
in are selling for now, but it might not be much more than $350.
