I had a similar problem which I finally found some info on. In my case I had a CD that I couldn't eject via software so I used the eject hole in the slot. Then I couldn't use any startup CD at all, The info, I think it was on Apples site, said that after you use mechanical ejection you must start up and then shut down. On the second startup, holding the C key down will work. And it did. Hope this helps.
