Just to put the likelihood of a CD drive croaking into
perspective...  I have replaced four or five of them
in the past five years while maintaining a fleet of
four or five machines.  My point is (sorry for taking
so long to get here!) that it would not be at all
unusual for a CD drive to fail.  I mention it only
because it may give you impetus to look into a cause
that you otherwise might have dismissed as too remote.
