It may sound silly, but try running a lens cleaning CD/DVD disc through it. When you say it wont recognize any disc it would make me suspect dust. We're in a dusty environment and all the computers here, older Slot load iMac, new iMac and MDD power Mac will exhibit this exact behavior when they laser gets dusty. Worth trying, if this is the problem, the fix is inexpensive and dramatic.

We were all very conscious of dust in the floppy days, we seem to forget about it with CD's.
