No, I can't comment on the efficacy of your proposed method, but I wonder, if your problem is not being able to boot from an install CD -- did you try inserting the CD and then choosing it as the start-up disk? Yes. The computer will not recognize the disk in the tray. Prompts to reformat. And have you tried re-setting the PRAM? I have done so. What OS is on the Mac? A special one from the University of Michigan - security features set, then removed by me.
