I would only get Word if I knew I was going to be sending MS Word documents electronically to people who are using PC's rather than Macs. It was not quite clear whether the need for a word processing application was to create electronic files that would be shared over the internet or whether it was to create paper letters that would be mailed out via snail mail. If it's the latter, I think AppleWorks would be as good as Word and a bit less expensive.
AppleWorks 6 does do Word documents, and I also have MacLinkPlus Deluxe, for those times when someone sends me a Word document. Translates well!
