Hi Mark - I think iPhoto was a free download when I
got it, but this is just a hazy memory.  It is real
easy and real stable so it would be a good choice. 
Image processing is real limited, however, but I am
assuming that they are not into that.

As far as word processing, much as it pains me, I
would give the nod to MS Word.  I find it to be really
quick on my 500mhz - say, 5 times faster than
ThinkFree Office.  I have never had compatibility
issues of any stripe.  On word processing, I guess I
have concluded that sometimes one has to just go for
it in this life, and spend the extra few bucks for the
real deal.  Sort of like buying tires... not the sort
of thing where you want to skimp.  Just my 2 sheckels
- feel free to make whatever use you may.
