First let me thank you for the balanced answer, Mark, although we may or may
not agree on the heat issue.

I would like to address an issue that a lot of people don't seem to
understand and that is how to do "Repair Permissions" properly, as this
utility works quite different than other disk repair tools do:

Permissions are file and folder attributes that say who can read, write and
execute these, and they can be updated on the fly, even while the file is
being read or written to.

The way permission settings shall be done on a system is written in files in
/Library/Receipts, and there is for instance a new .pkg-file for each
update, that among other things contains this information. That means that
Apple can change a default permission settings from time to time, usually
due to security measures, but also to make things work properly.

This leads to three conclusions:

1) Only run "Repair Permissions" from the Disk Utility on the hard drive,
not from the old and probably outdated CD. If you run it from the CD you may
run into problems like this 10.2 issue:

2) Just run it while you do your normal stuff. No need to boot from the CD,
no need to stop doing fun stuff: just surf, play WarCraft, iTunes or
whatever. It takes its time, but that is it.

3) Don't delete the files in /Library/Receipts, or you will not be able to
run Repair Permissions properly anymore.

There are longer explanations here:

Cheers,

Kim
