You don't OWN the music. You're licensing the track for as long as
the iTunes store stays in business and you can run the iTunes
software. At least it's a loose-DRM, tho - so you can convert the
tracks to mp3 or other formats without any significant loss. That
increases the track's "longevity".
Dan, you're confusing the iTunes Store with a SUBSCRIPTION service
like Rhapsody or Napster 2. You don't need to be connected to play or
keep the music you've purchased. I've purchased music from the iTunes
Store and play it on an OS 9 machine with iTunes 2 which can't access
the Store. Also, once the track is converted to AIFF then you can
burn it to a cd and play it just about anywhere. Basically, if the
iTunes Music Store went belly-up tomorrow, you could still play the
purchased music in iTunes, convert it to AIFF, etc. as long as you
have the file stored somewhere. However, if you lost your iTunes
Library and hadn't backed it up, then you'd be up the proverbial
creek.
