You have been lucky. Many Mac models will not start at all, or won't find a System folder, unless the battery is in good shape.

And the problems can start WAY before the Mac stops remebering time and date.

First Rule with Mac problems: check your battery. Anything significantly lower than 3.6 V should be replaced
