That is not what Chris said. He said that data on a drive is not in danger of 
being damaged *because of a dead PRAM battery* and he is correct. He is also 
correct that the worse case *because of the dead battery* is that the mac may 
not boot. If the dead battery is the only problem with the machine, there is no 
reason to assume that the data on the drive is ruined.
