>I find your incongrous assumption that hard drives never fail, nor
>can they become corrupted due to other components or natural age,
>fascinating. I'm glad you've had such good luck with your data so
>far, but let me put it this way ... DriveSavers (a company that

Um, please quote where I said that a hard drive failing wouldn't risk
damaging the data on the drive?!? What I said, and was very clear with,
was PRAM battery failing wouldn't damage the data on the drive.

You made either a very big leap, or you failed to actually read (or
comprehend) what I wrote.

>Do they also lack the mental wherewithall to locate an Apple
>Specialist (or just some geek, really) who will do it for them for a
>nominal fee?

They might be able to locate such a person. But they also might not. In
fact, you even quoted further along where I said a basic service shop is
likely to charge $75 or more to do the task. People don't open computer
service shops to do free work, and most of the time, they don't really
care how simple a job may be. If it takes time, and takes bench space
(both of which changing a battery will do), then it gets charged for.
Even if charged at a straight hourly rate for just the time spent, they
could still be looking at $25-$30 to change the battery (going on $60/hr,
15 minutes to do the task means $15 on labor, plus $10 on the battery is
$25).

If this is an older less used computer, maybe they didn't want to spend
$25 on it. Or maybe, they have a very tight income and simply can't
afford $25 for something they don't see as being broken (and something
that even, it appears, according to Apple, isn't a big deal).

>Saying that a dead PRAM battery "isn't really a problem" is exactly
>akin to saying that frequent lightning storms in your area "aren't
>really a problem" because nothing bad has happened to your computer/
>electrical appliances so far -- certainly not worth buying a UPS or
>doing anything out of the ordinary when a lightning storm is around ...

The leap of logic here is amazing. PRAM battery failure has no evidence
of causing harm to computers, lighting strikes do. Look it up, you will
find lots of evidence for the dangers of lighting, but none for the
dangers of PRAM battery failure. I actually did look it up before, I dug
thru Apple's tech notes, looking for just ONE that even hinted that
something bad could happen if the PRAM battery goes dead. The worst I
could find is macs failing to boot.

>More accurately, I think the proper phrase for you (at least in the
>part of the US where I live) is "a real piece of work." Best wishes
>for your luck to hold.

Putting aside the fact that I'm actually freakishly anal about keeping my
assorted clocks set to the same time.... you fail to point out here why
if someone doesn't use a VCR clock, or use anything that relies on the
VCR clock, exactly why should they bother to set it?!? To match your view
of the world? That's a pretty poor reason.

As for being "a real piece of work", um... well... thank you! :-)
