Why are you risking your data for something that will cost you about
$11 and a few minutes of your time to fix?
Risking what data? At no time is the data on a Mac, ANY Mac, ever in
danger of being damaged or lost because of a dead battery. Worst case,
you have a Mac model that can't boot with a dead battery, in which
case
the data sits on the hard drive until such time that the battery is
replaced (or the drive pulled and accessed by another computer).
I find your incongrous assumption that hard drives never fail, nor
can they become corrupted due to other components or natural age,
fascinating. I'm glad you've had such good luck with your data so
far, but let me put it this way ... DriveSavers (a company that
charges THOUSANDS of dollars to recover one's hard drive) is still in
business after more than 15 years and is still going strong. Largely
thanks to people with your attitude.
Did you ever stop to think the person lacks the skills or
confidence to
change the battery?
Do they also lack the mental wherewithall to locate an Apple
Specialist (or just some geek, really) who will do it for them for a
nominal fee?
I'm sensing a pattern here ... in the words of that famous cigarette
ad, you'd rather fight than switch.
So they might be looking at, do nothing, or pay $75 or more to fix
something, that in essence, isn't really a problem.
Saying that a dead PRAM battery "isn't really a problem" is exactly
akin to saying that frequent lightning storms in your area "aren't
really a problem" because nothing bad has happened to your computer/
electrical appliances so far -- certainly not worth buying a UPS or
doing anything out of the ordinary when a lightning storm is around ...
Are you, in short, a "12:00 Flasher"?*
If they don't use the clock on the VCR or the timer on the VCR,
then why
bother setting it?
You ARE a 12:00 Flasher! :)
More accurately, I think the proper phrase for you (at least in the
part of the US where I live) is "a real piece of work." Best wishes
for your luck to hold.
Cheers
Chas
