Thanks for the good points Scott. Let me give a more complete summary, and then we
can discuss the logs:
1. Messages are known to arrive at the mail server, but are not downloaded to Outlook
Express when using IMAP as the protocol.
There are no visible error messages.
2. The withheld or "invisible" messages appear to have RFC-compliant headers, but it
is the headers that prevent the downloads. I
can confirm this by editing the headers directly at the server.
3. "Defective" headers have some kinds of punctuation in the display portion of the
To:, From:, or Cc: lines. This includes commas
and backslashes. The following is an example of a header line that stops the message
from downloading, but it is NOT the only
example:
To: "Bednarz, Ben" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
4. This problem occurs with all 5.x versions of Outlook Express on all platforms and
operating systems, with all users. Some people
have reported the problem with Outlook, but I have not confirmed it.
5. This problem does NOT occur when I use myrealbox.com for the email server, rather
than IMail. myrealbox.com supports IMAP, which
makes it a good control for testing.
6. The Outlook IMAP log file (IMAP.log, usually in your windows directory) lists parse
errors when it tries to read one of these
malformed or invisible messages. I will quote below a portion of an IMAP.log file. I
have not been able to find an expert to read
these error messages, so I don't know how to interpret them.
7. I am not aware of an IMail log file that will log IMAP connections for when client
programs are downloading mail.
That is a summary of the facts. The problem appears to be either IMail or Outlook
Express, and so far, I haven't gotten a lot of
help from either company.
