For private use, the DOS version is free.... I did find the
documentation to be lacking...Don't think I've found it yet, not online
that I found. Things like detailed command line switches are awful nice
when using a command line program....

That could be...I've been watching and reading threads for a couple of
months now, but it is tough to catch and absorb everything. Like I
said, it has been a learning experience but I understand the deal now.
So if I run my regular NAV on-access scanner, will that interfere
also????

Well...that great if you know how, but it's something I've not done
before... I don't like extra
processes running either. I will probably agree with you and dump the auto update and
do
it manually.

Ok, there is a time difference...I just want the registration
code...that's not even tech support, just clerical paperwork kinda
stuff, sales processing orders. It always makes me wonder when
companies are slow processing sales....

That is a thought.

Seems that way with nearly every vendor I deal with these days... Was
up until 3am trying to convince the CLEC they had
an incoming trunking problem. They wrote it off as a CPE issue (ok,
whatever). A day later a switch tech calles me saying that many
customers had called complaining of static on the lines. Static is
annoying to voice, death to modems.. Tonight it happened again, and the
switch tech tells me they had a flakey DS3 card, the same DS3 carrying
much of their T-1 phone traffic. He seemed annoyed that I made another
trouble call, but magically a couple hours later, my dialup server is
taking calls fine again... So much for a CPE problem... I hate being
right, but it seems like 90% of the time if I don't figure it out, then
kick the vendor, nothing gets done. sorry for
rambling.

Went with F-Prot because it seemed to be the easiest overall to
implement. I won't pay for the windows license after this year...but
I'll keep paying for the DOS version.

hmmmm you must be more of a code guy than me...I design the networks,
install the routers, do the physical wiring, setup dailup access
equipment, setup mail, radius, dns servers, etc...but I'm not so great
with writing anything special....I'm still stuck with basic batch
files...one guy can't be good at everything.

I'm overall happy with my results and the credit goes to this list for
pointing me in the right direction, and saving me hours (days maybe
weeks?) of research to find a good, viable solution. ISP's and Internet
tech types can be tough, but if you watch and listen long enough...you
will gleen enough from them (us, that is) to eventually have a clue.
