I saw something similar happen before, where there were issues like this 
using SSL with web messaging.  I never found out what the problem was, but 
was able to work around it by using stunnel ( http://www.stunnel.org ), an 
"SSL tunneling" program that will take care of the SSL so that IMail 
doesn't have to.  It might be worth looking into.
