We used Rockliffe Mailsite as an inbound gateway to Exchange. MailSite
has a nice wildcard alias feature that allows to reroute all mail
*@bogus.com to *@exchange.bogus.com (just an example), has more control
over relay permissions, and allows to define manual routes (in addition
to DNS MX records or instead of them)

I never tried to use Imail as a gateway.

As you described I think Imail will only accept incoming mail for
bogus.com
Everything else it sees as an external domain (hence the relay
situation)
"Relay mail for [addresses]" is not the IP address of the target mail
system, it is the IP address of the originator that would be allowed to
relay mail via the Imail server.

I see other posts relating to this topic but I cannot find a definitive
answer. We wish to use Imail as a gateway for "incoming" mail only in
front of Exchange. We have created only a bogus host name within Imail
called bogus.com. Modified the MX record for the real domain to point to
the Imail box. Created a host file entry on the Imail box to point to
the Exchange box (MX resolution on the Imail box for the real domain
correctly points to the Exchange box as a result). We have enabled
"Relay Mail for" and included the IP of the Exchange box. Yet email
destined for the real domain is still denied "not a gateway" at the
Imail box.

According to the manual:

Setting Up IMail Server as a Mail Gateway
If you are using any of the "Relay Mail for" options on the SMTP
Security tab, and want to relay outgoing mail for another mail server,
the address of the other server must be added by using the "Addresses"
button, and entering the remote IP's into the table.

the only thing the "relay mail for" option restricts are the IP's of the
SMTP client allowed to "send into" the Imail server, not "receive from"
the Imail server. How do I allow Imail to relay for a specific
destination without opening it up for the world?

FYI, if I do open up to "relay mail for anyone" mail flows correctly.

Thanks!
Bob
