That's fine. The more the internet connected boxes do, the greater the risk (or as Microsoft likes to call it, RASQ)
We have several customers that want their outermost relays to not be writable, and be remotely bootable to a fresh box without fear of OS change. It is made so not because it has to query a database. Performance would be crippled if it queried a remote database. You guys make very good points, of course. While there are some reasons to hold off querying a userbase until later-stage relays--performance being the chief one--and some large providers don't 550 at the MX, security is just not a persuasive reason. Querying a userbase need not involve local storage at all, thus making the "bootable CD" a red herring. Nor need it involve the ability to browse the entire userbase. Nor need it involve touching the mailbox server.
