There is a reason email bound for microsoft.com hits 3 layers of gateways before arriving at one of the Exchange Servers.
does anybody know what it is? MS is hardly the industry leader in high-volume mail systems.
Our biggest concern is security. I want the outermost relay to be basic and secure; however, in the event of its compromise, there is little or nothing there.
relay boxes, gateway appliacnes not be trusted for any except smtp, and they have no privileges with any other boxes, totally untrusted, have no passwords, etc, etc.
No user database.
the relay boxes need the user base (not passwords) to be able to reject unknown users, a critical function.
