Some people will use IMail as the gateway, because they are familiar with IMail. If price isn't an issue, that's often the best way to go.
But if IMail's inability to handle 500+ K msgs/day without very $powerful hardware and the hottest tuning tricks is the motivation for adding a gateway to offload from Imail, is Imail a reasonable choice for the 500+ K msg gateway?
With 2 gateways, that's 250K per server -- half the load, minus web messaging and such. Plus, a gateway can tolerate higher CPU usage (users won't be connecting via POP3, so they won't notice the CPU usage). Also, with 2 gateways, if IMail chokes on one (receiving more E-mail than it can handle), the other will automatically be used.
What kind of policies are available in MS SMTP?
I have no clue, sorry -- I'm not familiar with SMTP policies.
