There are many different solutions and requirements of clients. Some functions critical to one, are completely irrelevant to another.

Right tool for the job kind of systems. If you want vanilla POP3, then Microsoft doesn't have anything substantial for you. I don't think they have much interest in providing anything in that ever-shrinking market, though IIS6 handles it quite well. But for collaborative, relational messaging solutions (does that qualify as a 'system'?) they continue to push the competition and remain a leader in scalable messaging solutions. Imail is a leader for its market segment and price point. It does not make a good, scalable relay, but it will do in a pinch. IIS5 and IIS6 are solid, high volume SMTP servers, as good as any on the Windows platform, with the transpost accessible by code of various languages. >>the relay boxes need the user base (not passwords) to be able to reject unknown users, a critical function.
