I'm not sure why managing another domain would be difficult; domains are $10 per year or less, and it's just an additional host entry in your DNS records, right? Register exchange.domain.com with a public IP, make sure it only accepts mail from your iMail server, and add additional email addresses to those user accounts on the exchange server that need to receive mail from the iMail server... unless I'm missing something (which could very well be true).
Are the two servers in the same location?
