Exchange Recipient Policies are incredibly easy to configure. You just say that every username is valid on @example.com and @exchange.example.com, comparable to IMail host aliases. In fact, if you want to enable routing between Exchange users and IMail users sharing the same domain (which you'll HAVE TO for the two groups to send mail to each other, no matter what you do here), there's no way you're getting away with the plainest-vanilla Exchange setup. POP retrieval is crazy overkill for such a scenario. Exchange has the capability built-in.
