Using your example below, on a good day, if I had 10 spam tests each taking 2 seconds, then let's say for sake of arguement, that this is ok. BUT what if one or more of the 10 spam test, was taking 5-10 seconds per test, due to a querry overload on one or more of the spam test servers (Ex: Spamcop). This is what I'm trying to pervent. Did I explain this right?
Your DNS server will automatically query whichever DNS server of theirs is responding fastest, which can help out a lot. If they are indeed taking 5-10 seconds to respond (and it is a long-term problem, that won't be fixed within hours/days), then there is more incentive to do the zone transfers (in this case, if it was averaging 10 seconds per lookup for that one test, you would be talking about going from 30 seconds to 20 seconds).
However, if you are looking at alternatives, another option would be to look at anti-spam software that runs the tests in parallel. In this case, it would take less than 10 seconds to run all the tests, even if one or more were taking 5-10 seconds. That would take you from 30 seconds in this case to 5-10 seconds.
