If the Lycos-type tactic works, I expect other Lycos-type facilities (but not necessarily via Windows screensaver) to appear, and attacking the same targets, resulting in total DDoS.
The more numerous the attackers, the more complete the DoS, the better/quicker the result, so that these spamvertizers won't even think about spamming again, and hosting/harboring services will be triply careful in qualifying/monitoring their clients. Mission accomplished.
Subscriber networks operators could also be targetted. Level3, Comcast, RR, Adelphia, ATT, etc, the whole lot of them that won't stop the spam/virus/ratware spew from their networks could have their MXs, DNSs, and corporate websites shut down by DDoS until they stop the spew.
