Aw
shucks, why not now!
Generac, free shipping, free AUTOMATIC transfer switch, free pad, under
$3K, 15KW. Add $500 for a 250-gallon propane tank and "Surf til you
drop!".

I run
6 servers on a $120 Belkin 1200 va. The monitor software says it's 56% loaded,
and the battery shows about 65% after the generator kicks
on.

Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] OT: KVM over IP & RemoteReboot
Since we're in control of all machines and these are not colo's, the multiple user access isn't even a necessity - but great to know, and a good item at $139 MSRP
What we're likely to do is use some older 8 port MasterSwitches, plug them into the existing UPS (which should be enough for 4 of these machines) and just use
four of the ports, leaving the other four empty. We can pick these up very cheap on eBay.
On the new machines - we're going to put 12 per "metro rack", plus KVM, local (to the rack) 10/100 switch, keyboard and monitor -
your approach sounds best - one larger UPS with an extra attached battery (around $1k MSRP) plus the $139 MasterSwitch
Thanks for all the advice. Next week... generators... ; )
Hope everyone has a happy & healthy New Year. I know I'll be home, monitoring the network, just in case that pesky Y2K bug shows up late....

I'm thinking that maybe something got lost in the shuffle here when APC was first discussed. The older model MasterSwitch did not allow for individual logins to control individual ports, however, the newer versions do, and this is a lot less expensive than buying individual devices for each outlet.
For each rack (set of servers), get a single UPS that can handle the wattage of the combined servers for the necessary period of time, and add a MasterSwitch or other PDU from APC that allows for separate logins for separate ports, and you have yourself a complete solution without a wiring mess or excessive equipment to support. Just read the manuals associated with the PDU's listed on APC's site:
http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=70
Note from the MasterSwitch product brochure:
The prices listed on their site are the MSRP's, and new from Shopper.com you will generally do better than 20% off that price. Find something suitable and used on eBay and get +50% off. The following 16-port device has an MSRP of $139 and allows for multiple users:
- Individual Outlet Control
- MasterSwitch products provide power solutions for co-locators (COLOs) and
- Internet Service Providers (ISPs). COLOs and ISPs can take control of their
- businesses by giving control back to their customers. This is done by administrators
- assigning individual or multiple outlet control to user accounts.
- Customers then have the ability to control their equipments power without onsite
- intervention.

A used (eBay) UPS that doesn't need special wiring and can handle the load (~2,000 VA) with new batteries and a new 16 port MasterSwitch of this type should run somewhere around $500...shipped.
