When I would start my lecture with a new class, I would start with "Identification and Nomenclature are two very different things".It is important that our plant is correctly identified, nomenclature is a secondary aspect especially in modern electronic era. There was a time when two volume Index Kewensis was Nomenclature Bible and none could ignore it, but there also the practice of accepted names was discontinued in all Supplements published during 20th century. We were very optimistic when TPL was initiated with collaboration of several Institutes with Kew, but unfortunately it has more confusions with often multiple accepted names, binomials with no synonyms (not even Basionym) and so on. To make matters worse major databases like TPL, GRIN don't agree on many names. It is best for us to concentrate on correct Id and don't bother much with accepted name as they keep on changing so fast.
