When the user authenticates the AUTHENTICATED variable available to your templates 
will be set to "YES"

Most mail clients support authentication of one form or another (actually, I don't 
know of any that can't).  Eudora uses
CRAM-MD5 (which is superior to LOGIN).  Did you enable CRAM-MD5?
