Couldn't it be just a view as in "All My Files" ?

However, it's solved (if it even needs solving), I know that I don't want a 
file deleted on my computer if I need to remove it from a mobile device. 
Perhaps that can be an option in a pref.

My Documents folder is 52GB right now.

good point!

But I really don't want deleting a document from a mobile device to delete it 
from my computer.  

This may simply require managing the syncing in a smart way from my computer.
May not be an issue at all.
