Yes, you're right, photos will be different with the photostream and all. 

It seems that the last 1000 photos you take on any iOS device or load into 
iPhoto (or Pictures Library on Windows) are distributed over wifi or Ethernet 
(not 3G) to iCloud and all other devices.

It seems iCloud only stores these photos for 30 days but I don't believe they 
would be deleted from the iOS device they were taken on or the computer they 
were loaded onto.  

Other iOS devices have 30 days to take them out of the photostream if they want 
to save them on that device.  Computers automatically keep all photos from 
photostream.  

If you miss the 30 days on your iOS device I guess one can always sync.

I'm happy to wait a while, these things take time, but you may be a bit more 
optimistic on this than me.
