If you want to use very few external components, that is. You can, of course, drive the segments with only 4 pins if you use a CD4511 BCD-to-seven-segment-decoder. If you add another CD4017, you'll need only one pin for reset and one for clock to drive the commons of up to ten digits. So 6 pins can be enough for ten digits. If you don't have six pins, use one for data, one for clock and connect as many CD4094 8-bit-serial-to-parallel shift registers as you need. Using only one pin would be a bit more complex, but two pins are definitely not very hard.
