I've got really very little time at the moment, but I do need to contradict you in at least one point:
"The price and availability are the only ones worth using 8bit PICs, that I can tell ya!" My one and only reason for using 8bit PICs is that JAL does not work on other chips. I'm familiar with pascal and I do not want to switch languages. I would have switched to 32bit long ago, but there is no language I could use for those chips (apart from assembler).
