My interest are similar.  I will be preparing artificially created models of
natural geodes, extracting volumetric data from various coordinates of the
volume, and rendering the data as a user controlled navigable terrain.  The
deposit of different types of materials in a geode contain many natural
features including types of materials. A  particular type of material will be
isolated and its displacement from some plane of reference recorded as a
height.  Consequently I hope to use height information to render the
extracted volumetric data as a 3D terrain.  Do you know of any on-line
references that contain useful information pertinent to this data
visualization strategy?
