I fully agree with you've said below - especially with last sentence. But cannot stop thinking what level (or lack of ) confidence I have now with respect to Java3D if SUN if not saying anything at all but "developement has been currently halted". So going with JOGL is no go - for now - and staying with Java3D could bring me news one of these days : Sun has decided to discontinue J...blah blah blah So one to do right now ??? - that is the question

I certainly don't oppose JOGL at all. I consider it a potentially valuable alternative to Java 3D. What is baffling is why Sun would drop development of Java 3D.
My issue with JOGL is that it's NOT backed by Sun. My understanding of java.net is that it is hosted by Sun as a place for 3rd Party developers to gather and share such projects. That's great, but do I want to invest my time and effort into learning JOGL or basing my products on it without a big company like Sun driving it forward and trying to maintain some standards?
Who controls JOGL? Per java.net this is "athomas djp gamesadmin kbr".
What should inspire any confidence in any of us to adopt JOGL?
