I believe the actual message was that the 1.4 was in a "holding pattern".
This was clarified as meaning that Java3D wouldn't be seeing new
development for a while (which seems logical now since development efforts
will be targeted at the new gaming developments, jogl, joal, jinput).

However, I've not seen anywhere that Sun is pulling its backing from the
product, or that Java3D is dead. It seems to me that focus is shifting to
the "new" products. I'd expect this to last for a while, and then either a
new scenegraph based on jogl (of which there have already been rumours) or
a new focus on Java3D.

It wouldn't seem that logical to invent a new scene graph after Java3D has
already done most the work...

As far as I've noticed here the bug reports and support are still coming
through.
